Bullying doesn’t only happen to kids

Many people consider bullying to be limited to school playgrounds. But in actual fact, there are many different forms of bullying that can affect everybody, including adults.

Defined as physical, verbal, relational or reactive aggression, bullying involves an imbalance of power, as the bully gets a kick out of exerting physical and emotional distress on others.

Taking no action will mean victims of bullying – of any age, could suffer from depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. The good news is that martial arts training is a great way to overcome bullying. Not only will you learn to defend yourself physically, but you will also learn a few key disciplines that will help you gain your confidence back and build your inner strength.

But before we get into that, here are the 7 common types of bullying, which vary depending on who is doing the bullying and how they do it.

7 Different types of bullying

  1. Physical Harassment / Assault
  2. Verbal And Emotional Bullying
  3. Bullying Through Intimidation
  4. Exclusion And Rumour Bullying
  5. Sexual Bullying / Sexual Harassment
  6. Stalking / Harassment
  7. Cyber Bullying

How SMA can help you overcome bullying

At SMA Centre, we have over 12 qualified teachers with over 60 years of teaching experience, teaching Martial Arts to adults and children. And its not just as a way to improve health and to learn self-defense, but also as a great way to channel frustration caused by bullying.

Self-discipline

Martial Arts is all about control! Of the many mental benefits this skill imparts is the ability to develop and maintain self-discipline in life itself. The ability to control your emotions, your desires and your reactions can be a huge asset both in your personal and professional life. It could be quite difficult to keep a state of balance and control, especially when  you or your child are a victim of bullying, but with regular practice of Martial Arts, it is indeed possible.

Self-confidence

It takes a lot of courage to step into a Martial Arts Centre. It takes courage to stand in front of someone who wants to hurt you.

But by just by showing up, day after day, week after week, even when things get tough and “life gets in the way”, you build your self-confidence and reshape your life. You will eventually feel powerful when you step on the mat knowing you are prepared for, and have the tools to face your opponent. These are the same tools you will use to face the world and all the problems it throws at you.

Emotional strength

Studies have shown that people who regularly take part in any form of Martial Arts, where grappling is involved, have higher energy levels, are more agreeable and emotionally receptive. And Brazillian Jiu Jitsu is seen to bring about the largest improvement in any practitioner’s mood. So grappling training can be an effective strategy in helping to lower your fatigue, increase happiness, composure and your emotional stability.

Physical strength

Aside from all the emotional, spiritual and psychological benefits of taking part in Martial Arts, the obvious benefit is your physical strength. By attending Martial Arts classes weekly you guarantee yourself a total body, high-aerobic workout that uses every muscle group in the body. Your stamina, muscle tone, flexibility, balance and strength will all improve! The regular training will also improve your cardiovascular health, help you lose weight, improve your reflexes – all of which are great confidence boosters.
